Dear Fresher

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to St Edmund’s! You will soon realise that Eddie’s is one of the friendliest, most relaxed, and international College in Cambridge. We have no doubt that you will have an amazing time here!

You will find yourselves in a vibrant multicultural environment, and you will have the opportunity to meet students from all over the world: around seventy different nations are represented here! The college was founded in 1896, and it is one of the four colleges in Cambridge which is oriented towards mature students. Its motto- ‘Per Revelationem et Rationem’ (Latin for: Through Revelation and Reason) resonates through the college, and you will encounter students from a broad spectrum of disciplines with whom you will engage in colourful debates and undoubtedly learn from.

The college is a fun and familiar place to live and we are confident that your time at Eddie’s will be exciting and memorable! In addition, our student’s association committee, the CR, is dedicated to ensuring our college provides a safe and thriving space for all students.

College has also assembled information for freshers, available here. They also have a comprehensive page on advice in academic matters which you might find helpful.

Letter from your CR President:

Whatever has brought you to Eddie’s – welcome!

It is hard to overstate how vibrant, intimate, and rich our community is. As a College for mature and postgraduate students, the depth and breadth of our community is unparalleled. For example, I am now in my mid-thirties and I am a second-year law undergraduate. Before coming to Cambridge, I had a career as a domestic and international sign language interpreter. My experience is not unusual at Eddie’s. Do talk to your fellow students over drinks and dinner: everyone has a story!

As the President of your CR, it would be remiss of me to not talk about the importance of student engagement. The intimacy of our environment extends to our relationship with College. We can, and do, make a difference to the everyday experience in our shared ‘home’, such as working with the College and the Alumni Society to fundraise for a new floor in our CR. We also run the bar, and all College bops (parties!): we know the importance of fun to go alongside studies. Please make a note in your diaries of CR General Meetings. It is a great way to meet other students and contribute – your opinion matters. Please take a look around the CR website for more information and join our Facebook groupto stay up to date.

Wherever you’re coming from, and wherever you end up going to, I am sure your time at Eddie’s will stay with you. I look forward to meeting you all in Michaelmas.

Matthew Banks, Eddie’s CR President
